MANAGING DIABETES

I’m sharing the continuation of Sugar-related problems.

METABOLIC SYNDROME’.

Is a precursor of Diabetes. Criteria for diagnosis include:

(1)Increased Waistline Circumference

(2) Plasma Triglyceride (bad cholesterol level),

(3) Elevated blood pressure >135/85

(4) High fasting blood glucose level.

CAUSES:

(1) Insulin resistance.
Insulin lowers the blood sugar. When Sugar is consumed, it is stored in the liver, muscle, fat cells as GLYCOGEN.

(2) Drugs such as
(a) steroids
(b) Oral contraceptives
(c) Valproates for treating epilepsy.

SYMPTOMS:

(1) Blurred vision
(2) increased thirst
(3) increased urination
(4) Fatigue
(5) Elevated blood pressure
(6) High blood sugar
(7) High Triglyceride level
(8) Body Mass Index High >28, Waistline >40 inches.

Why Concerned?
Because Metabolic Syndrome is the bedrock of heart diseases, stroke and heart attack.

MANAGEMENT:
(1) Medication
(2) Lifestyle Modification (diet/exercises, smoking cessation, alcohol avoidance, minimise sedentary lifestyle), changing mindset on Myths etc).
(3) Weight Management
(4) Health education:

consider socioeconomic status, accessibility to essential nutrients and medical facilities.

DEFINITION of TERMS:

PRECURSOR means forerunner, anything that comes before another of the same kind.
